Aliza's Legal Accountability Project maintains a nationwide Clerkships Database (AKA “Glassdoor for Judges”), a justice tech tool, that democratizes judicial clerkship information and opportunities for law students and recent grads by collecting post-clerkship reviews from former judicial law clerks nationwide and providing them to applicants (students and recent graduates) nationwide in an easily accessible format for a small fee of just $50 per year to subscribe. LAP’s Database, containing over 2,000 candid clerkship reviews about more than 1,200 judges nationwide, has revolutionized judicial clerkship hiring, creating transparency and accountability in the judiciary where before there was none: LAP has already served over 3,000 law students and recent graduates with candid clerkship information about great bosses to apply to and abusive judges to avoid in less than 2 years. LAP’s Database is a vector for social change: this third-party solution to the lack of accountability in the judiciary (the federal judiciary is exempt from Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and all federal anti-discrimination laws) fills the gap for law schools that have been unable or unwilling to collect and disseminate candid information about judges as employers for students, and for a judiciary that’s unable or unwilling to hold judges accountable for their workplace conduct. It’s also created accountability through transparency: there’s nothing abusive judges and bad bosses hate more than negative feedback they cannot see or retaliate against clerks for sharing–but knowing their workplace conduct is on display for thousands of applicants each year has forced judges to change their behavior and has forced judiciary-level policy change as well.

A few examples of impact on access-to-justice outcomes one year into the Thomson Reuters AI for Justice program that Laura leads: Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino - their attorneys report saving 8–15 hours per week via AI adoption, which has allowed them to represent 2,000 more clients this year and to double the people served through their legal aid hotline each day. The Innocence Center, which is dedicated to freeing innocent people from prison, reported that CoCounsel cut the time to prepare exoneration petitions in half, from one year to six months, and doubled the number of new cases reviewed each month. Using CoCounsel, the Veterans Legal Institute can now prepare landlord-tenant and family law motions in minutes instead of hours. The AI for Justice initiative includes an incubator with deeply embedded partnerships with a select diverse group of legal aid providers, public defenders, and pro bono initiatives, to identify, document, and amplify high-impact legal aid AI use cases. Translating learnings from early adopters to the broader legal aid community is a critical (and under-discussed) part of closing the justice gap.
